1. Who is responsible
ElectricianFinder (electricianfinder.co.za) is run by Adriaan Bester, a sole proprietor in Cape Town, South Africa, who is the responsible party for your personal information under the Protection of Personal Information Act (POPIA). Contact: privacy@electricianfinder.co.za, phone +27 81 644 5525.
2. If you are looking for an electrician
You do not sign up, and there are no forms for you to fill in. What we do collect:
- When you tap WhatsApp, Call or Email on a listing: which business, which button, the page and town, the page you arrived on and the name of the site that sent you (for example Google or WhatsApp, never the full address; your browser remembers it for that visit only, not in a cookie), your browser type, and a code made from your IP address and browser that changes every day, so a double tap counts once. We cannot turn that code back into your IP address. The conversation itself happens in WhatsApp, your phone or your email, and we never see it. We use these taps to count how many enquiries each business gets.
- Your location, if you allow it: the homepage asks your browser for your location to show businesses near you. If you allow it, your browser rounds it to about 1 km before sending it to our server, which asks Google for the name of your town. If you decline, or your device cannot tell, we use the town our hosting provider estimates from your IP address; nothing is sent to anyone else. Your browser keeps the result for up to a day (in its local storage, not a cookie) so it does not ask again.
- What you search for: the place you type is sent to our server, which may look it up with Google.
- Visit statistics: Vercel Web Analytics and Speed Insights count page views and loading speed without cookies and without identifying you.
- Server logs: our hosting provider records each request (IP address, browser, and the address requested, which for a nearby search includes your position rounded to about 1 km) and keeps it for a short time, for security and to fix faults. Our own request log leaves the position out.
We do not use cookies on these pages.
3. If your business is listed
Listings are built from the ECA(SA) register and from public sources such as Google Maps and the business's own website: business name, registration number and status, the area you work in, and the contact details you publish (phone, email, website, address). Where a business is one person, some of this is personal information. We use it so that the public can find a registered business and check its registration, which we believe is a legitimate interest that also serves yours, and we take it only from records you or the register have made public.
- You can ask us to correct, update or remove your listing, or object to it, at any time (section 6).
- If you send a request on the List your business page or through a link we sent you, we keep what you give us (business name, registration number, your name, phone, email and message) to answer you and update your listing.
- We may contact a listed business about its listing, using the contact details it publishes. By email we do this once, and not again unless you reply. The link in that email is unique to the business, so we can see that it was clicked and when, and whether a person or a machine opened it (WhatsApp, for example, opens a link itself to show a preview). We keep no IP address or browser details with it, only a code made from them that changes every day, so a double click counts once. Our email provider, Brevo, also records when an email is opened (an invisible image in the email; we cannot switch it off). We use clicks and opens only to decide whom to phone, never to email you again. Tell us at any time not to contact you, and we will not.
- If you use our business dashboard or ask for notifications, we send them by email or WhatsApp. Reply STOP to any WhatsApp message from us to stop them.
4. Who else receives it
We do not sell personal information. These services process it for us, and some of them store it outside South Africa under their own data-protection terms:
- Vercel (hosting, logs, visit statistics, and the town estimated from your IP address) and Supabase (our database)
- Google Maps Platform (place names, and your position rounded to about 1 km)
- Brevo and Resend (email), and Meta's WhatsApp Business Platform (WhatsApp messages)
- unpkg.com (supplies the icons on some pages, so it sees your IP address when they load)
We may also disclose information when the law requires it.
5. How long we keep it
- Contact taps: as long as we report enquiry counts to businesses. They do not identify you.
- Listings: while the business is on the register or in a public source, unless you ask us to remove it.
- Requests you send us: while we deal with them, and afterwards only as a record of what you asked.
- Server logs: a short time, set by our hosting provider.
6. Your rights
Under POPIA you may ask what personal information we hold about you, ask us to correct or delete it, and object to us using it. Email privacy@electricianfinder.co.za. We may ask you to show that the information is yours before we act, and we aim to reply within 30 days. See how to have your information deleted.
If you are not happy with our answer, you may complain to the Information Regulator.
7. Security
The site is served only over HTTPS, and only our server holds the keys to our database.
8. Children
The site is not aimed at children, and we do not knowingly collect their information.
9. Changes
If we change this policy, we will update it here and change the date at the top.
